When I was young, I imagined of venturing my desk as I became smaller. Even though it is the same desk, there will be a new perspective seen from a different point of view. The picture of my desk is composed with the schoolyard to show that the picture is my imagination and that I want to venture my desk just as in the outdoors. In addition, I put unrealistic aspects such as the standing pillar of water inside the cup, or a person coming out from the mirror. The characters are reflections of myself, wandering around the desk.

THBT South Korea should instigate Jasmine Revolution in North Korea.

1. It goes against the spirit of Jasmine Revolution. Jasmine Revolution is a voluntary revolution, which is neither motivated or manipulated by a certain government or people. If South Korea instigates Jasmine Revolution, then it goes against the true meaning of the revolution. When a voluntary revolution happens, the reason is because the inhabitants desperately feel the need to do it. The desire and will in mind powers the people to change the world around them. To have a successful revolution, there should be the main force and will; however, if South Korea instigates the revolution, the time point being is when North Korea lacks the imminent will. Thus, there is lower possibility of having a successful revolution.

2. It is wrong to interfere with other countries domestic affairs. There had been many agreements and contracts which protects the sovereignty of countries. If South Korea instigates Jasmine Revolution, the act is invading North Korea’s own rights. The act can actually start an international dispute. World’s super powers are related with the present conflict between North and South Korea. The countries include USA, China, Japan, and others. Especially, USA and China are rivals in numerous aspects, such as economical status, ideology, and even ranking of international influence. For the ideological aspect, publicly China supports North Korea, while USA supports South Korea. The tension is big between the two teams; however, if chaos of North Korea happens due to the revolution, the fragile relationship can be broken, making an international dispute. There is possibility that the super powers can use the chaotic atmosphere of the revolution for their own goods. For example, China is tempting to merge North Korea’s territory into their own, while Japan is tempting the territory of South Korea.

3.  The social infra is disadvantageous in instigating a revolution. Due to the government, the social network for information in North Korea is poorly developed. The media, internet, and any route of information is thoroughly blocked by the government. To instigate the revolution, the information must spread to at least sympathize people into join the revolution. Without the power of the mass media, the situation is unlikely to get huge participation of the North Korean inhabitants. Also, under the heavy pressure from the government, the revolution act can be easily caught. In addition, the literary brain wash of the inhabitants makes it hard for the revolutionary atmosphere to spread.

4. The revolution will bring loss for both South Korea and North Korea. Seeing Libya, many child soldiers are being killed. There is no assurance that the revolution would be a peaceful one. If not, there would be great economical and social loss of two countries. Also, after the revolution, there would be great setbacks in settling, such as East Germany.

5. There is too much risk of instigating the revolution. Currently, South and North Korea are maintaining a fragile relationship. If the revolution fails, the act is providing a major reason for North Korea to wage a war upon South Korea. North Korea has provoked South Korea numerous times, and once even proclaimed war if further trouble happened. The act of instigating war is a great bait for North Korea to invade South Korea, bringing live hell to the peninsula.

Thus, South Korea should not instigate Jasmine Revolution in North Korea.

Concealed Sadness

A disorder has been present with mankind since long time ago. People assume that even King David suffered from it. Hippocrates, father of medicine, considered this disorder to be melancholia, or black bile, which at that time was considered to be main component of the human body. The disorder was already present in BC 1003 of King David’s time, and Hippocrates’s perception infers that it has been common even in BC 460. The disorder was close to people’s lives, enough to be portrayed in literature and art. Recently, the disorder was picked to become the next most serious problem in close future. What is this serious affliction? It is depression.

Depression, or depressive disorder, is unselective, sudden, and unpredictable. Anybody at anytime can suffer from it, lightly or even led to death. Everybody might feel gloomy sometimes, feel down after a bad morning, or maybe because of disputes with someone. Such mood changes are just everyday mood fluctuations, which can return to normal state, or become pleasurable attitude again. Since people go through ups and downs of feelings, they tend to ignore their moods, thinking it will get better again. However, the ignorance becomes a reason why depression gets under-diagnosed frequently and people suffer from it unknowingly. Maybe in past times, ignorance did not matter that much since depression was not a widely, seriously considered social problem. However, people should be aware of it now as depression rate is steadily increasing. Depression should no longer be considered as a minute problem, but as a serious health warning. Medics predict depression to be one of major diseases that will make the world suffer. According to WHO (World Health Organization), in 2020, depression will be most tormenting disease towards mankind, other than heart diseases. Currently, the prevalence rate of depression is 15% of the whole world in their lifetime, especially women of higher rate of 25%. The rate will increase according to current flow of the world. Also, depression ranks fifth for causes of death and disabilities. Statistics show how serious and threatening depression is to people.

One reason why depressions are deadly is that the symptoms of depression are not clear and distinguishable like other disorders or diseases. For example, when someone is suffering from a cold, that person sneezes and body temperature rises, allowing others to predict what the person is suffering from. Unlike cold, symptoms of depression are hard to distinguish from everyday mood cycles especially in the initial stage of depression. Only when the depression progresses and gets serious, others are able to recognize that the patient had been suffering psychologically. In addition, depression patients tend to cover up their symptoms or their feelings away from others. They feel ashamed by having a psychological disorder, especially depression. Because of combined reasons, patients neglect their conditions and wait in vague hope of being cured naturally. As patients are left alone, the chances become higher of depression getting worse. Patients not only get depressed by their uncontrollable situations, but also to themselves, wondering the reason why they should live. Such hopeless feelings go on, reaching the extreme when patients take suicide. Even if patients do not suicide, their daily lives would be greatly affected and hindered by their conditions. Cure is needed before patients fall into irrevocable state, but it is hard to even detect the disorder itself. Thus, it becomes clear that preventing depression is crucial.

What Is Depression?

Depression is “a syndrome reflecting sad and/or irritable mood, exceeding normal sadness or grief.” It is characterized by longer duration, stronger intensity, and more severe symptoms than normal mood change. There are several types of depression: major depression, dysthymia, bipolar disorder, and seasonal depression (Edwards). Major depression is depression with long duration, about 2 weeks, severe sadness, along with insomnia, being the common depression. Dysthymia is less severe, but with long duration. Bipolar disorder, or maniac depression, is constant flux between happiness and depression. Bipolar depression patients might seem satisfied and happy for short period of time, but their psychological health is fragile and is able to change into depression easily. The outcome of depression might be different, but it indicates that patients are suffering psychologically, and care is needed.

Symptoms of Depression

Common symptoms of depression includes, negative moods, loss of interest, social isolation, insomnia, tiredness, and thoughts of suicide. (Edwards) When a person becomes depressed, they usually persistently feel sad, angry, anxious, irritable, or even despondent. Patients frequently have emotional breakdowns, where they cry. They usually feel hopelessness about their future, their situation, and even about themselves. Many patients even feel helplessness after their effort to come out of depression. For example, many people say “Cheer up!” or “Take care!” for advice, but medical professors note that such saying would be no help to depression patients. The reason is that the patients had done everything that they had done and are feeling greatly depressed and helplessness as they are still suffering from depression. (Ichiro 91) Also, depression patients lose interest, even for food. Losing interest also leads to staying away from people and isolating themselves and losing weight for not eating. Depression patients are frequently unable to sleep, being more tired during the days. As the patients’ conditions become more serious, they feel serious hopelessness that they come to think of killing themselves to end their tormenting life. It is the most extreme attitude, in which must be prevented.

Causes of Depression

Medics and psychologists had long searched for possible causes of depression. During the 1950s and 1960s, they focused on the causes of depression, while later, they focused on the effects. They thought of two causes: endogenous and neurotic. (Edwards) Endogenous cause is depression with its roots to the gene or was seen to have no cause at all. Neurotic cause is depression triggered by external cause, such as from the surrounding environment. The later is proved, for people tend to become affected by environmental cause, such as constant exposure to stress.

Recently, scientists had found a seeming genetic cause for depression. Researchers of Kings College London pointed out that chromosome 3p25-26 is the genetic cause for depression. (Borland) They had done research of more than 800 British families, and found out that people who frequently suffered from depression had genetic variations in the same section. However, genetic variation is just higher change of probability, but not that it causes depression directly.

Another probability that scientists are focusing on is the actual mental health of patients. Psychologists focusing on positive psychology found differences in people’s smiles which had a relationship with people’s lives. People who had genuine smile called ‘Duchenne smile’ tend to live longer and happier than others who had face smile called ‘Pan-American smile.’ (Seligman 22) People done research on was mentally healthy people with no depression or whatsoever. However, even in ways of smiling indicates their mental state. People who try to be optimistic can handle their mental health better and healthier than those who tend to think pessimistically. Chance of depression can change according to ways people think about their surroundings.

Why Are Depression Rates Increasing in Modern Society?

There are combinations of reasons why people of modern society are getting depressed more easily and frequently than the past. Initially, professionalization of jobs became more complex than ever in modern society. There are numerous subdivisions of jobs, each with its own characteristics. Since jobs were divided, each career requires deep, professional knowledge and skills about that career. Educational requirement is also another reason why people spend so much time in educating themselves through elementary school to universities and colleges. Through the whole education term, people are ready with top-notch knowledge to help them get a specific career. Because of division of jobs, it became hard for people to change their career. Once a person chose their career and started their career life, it is hard to start another one, because they lack the knowledge and time to do so. In addition, people tend to gather at popular, favored jobs. Usually, popular careers include surgeons, dentists, lawyers, technicians, and others. These jobs have high competition, thus narrowing down the chance of moving to another wanted career. Thus, people who are dissatisfied with their jobs, have no choice but to stay or change to secondly-favored jobs. According to’s 4th annual survey of employee job satisfaction, about 30% of employees are dissatisfied with their current career. Stress from dissatisfying career can be fatal, for career is what people mostly invest their time into. When a career becomes dissatisfying, people lose interest and passion for their work, and thus become lacking than others who truly have passion for the same job. People become frustrated towards themselves, thus leading to depression if becomes serious.

Moreover, modern society requires perfectionists. As living conditions are getting better and comfortable, living expectations are getting higher. People want better materials and better services. To achieve high expectation, less mistakes and higher efficiency is needed. To handle the work, people are trying to be perfectionists, especially in what they do best or in their professions. Then, overwork is becoming frequent and people are testing themselves to their limits of their performance. There is no leisure time, and work stress is making the shoulders heavy of people. Because of heavy workload, slump sometimes come to people. To overcome slump, it is important to relax and give time for oneself out of responsibility. (Ichiro 55) However, society used to perfectionism, does not make an excuse towards slumps. Punishments and advices are frequently given, which adds up to the whole stress. Thus, people are pushed to do their work, and in a slump, efficiency drops. To do poorly in what people had pride is a giant stress and a way to losing self-confidence. (Ichiro 14) Continued harassment leads to depression, as stress and worry of not being able to recover piles up.

Curing Depression

To cure depression, it is important that both mood control of the patients and support from close friends and families are needed than medicines. Antidepressants can cure depression for a short interval of time, but it has countless side-effects. Also, patients tend to rely on medicines instead of trying to cure it themselves, leading to worse state. For patient individuals, they need to forgive themselves even if they make mistakes. Human can make mistakes, and there is no need to too harsh. When depression comes, it is important to gradually find what they are interested in, and evade too stressful activities. For people around, they should try to understand the patient, but not by their own standards. By understanding what the patient is suffering, there would be no pushing on. In the whole, it is important to acknowledge that humans are humans, not machines.

Eminem-Not Afraid

I’m not afraid

To take a stand

Come take my hand

We’ll walk this road together, through the storm

Whatever weather, cold or warm

Just lettin’ you know that, you’re not alone

Holla if you feel like you’ve been down the same road

Eminem’s “Not Afraid” is a song with direct lyrics about his inner feelings.  There are previous lyrics, which I favor. Sometimes, majority of the people witch-hunt down people who go against their beliefs, which is wrong. Because of such witch-hunt, even people who know what is right beocmes ignorant, and even become one of the thoughtless majority. The left, few people seem like they are alone and that the whole world turned backs on them. However, the lyrics are telling that actually they are not alone and that they should not be afraid to take a stand. I thought that it showed courage that people need, when the world is dominated by wrong beliefs of the majority.

Many people think rainbow as attractive, so do I. The different, bright colors are attractive and mystique.

Still, I believe there is more to the rainbow, than its colors which makes it attractive as it is. The important point of a rainbow is that the harmony the colors show. The lights are different from each other, but still it makes a great harmony in which its attractiveness shows. Each color does not try to dominate the rainbow or win over each other, but by shining bright distinctively makes one great piece of artwork.

Each person has one’s own characteristics. From the difference, people quarrel with each other. However, if people can respect each other and together express their characteristics, in whole we can make a great picture like the rainbow.

Quija board: a board used for necromancy, to invite spirits and talk with them. Unless you say ‘goodbye’ and get permission of the spirit, stopping the game will bring terrible results.

My friend Lancy came to sleepover at my house at 9 o’ clock bringing one of these. It seemed antique, but quite decorative, wth engravings of demons, spirits and something that looked like ancient alphabet. I asked where she had got it.

“I don’t know,” she said, “Some with-looking granny asked if I wanted to see supernatural happenings, and I said yes. I mean who wouldn’t want to? Anyways, when I replied, she shoved this Quija board into my arms and just went.”

“Well…I guess we can try that out tonight,” I said, “maybe a ghost or two would visit us.”

There were no grownups in my house, and any experiments were ready for us to do. We went to a dining table, and set up the board. The board is just a joke. What could possibly happen?”

We lightly held onto the pointer and asked, “Are you ready?”

The pointer moved and was on top of the ‘Yes’ sign. Lancy was definitely moving it, becuase my arm was totally resting.

“Oh my god. You moved it right? I didn’t do that.” shouted Lancy in utter disbeilief.

Oh. There she goes, acting. I said no, and pretended to be surprised, thinking that I would rather act together than to break the joy. We asked some more questions, and found out that the spirit was actually a demon. Suddenly and idea popped into my head.

“Hey. Let’s ask the demon if it can kill any person tonight. If it is really a demon answering our question maybe it can perform soem supernatural acts just like the granny said.” I said, thinking this whole Quija happening as a joke.

“Maybe we shouldn’t,” Lancy in a trembling voice, “I think the granny is right. It is neither of us who were moving the pointer. It can really be a demon.”

She should be an actor. I never saw someone who can put on a frightened face that real. I ignored her and asked if the demon can mrder anyone tonight. It replied ‘Yes.’

“Let’s stop here. We should…,” murmured Lancy.

Again ignoring her, I asked who the demon will kill.

“Stop!” screamed Lancy, throwing the Quija board away from the table. “I was scared, I told you. How can you ignore me, and keep doing it!” She began to cry.

“Chill,” I said, “You know that the whole Quija game is just a joke, don’t you? Let’s just forget this and go to bed.”

Lancy finally stopped crying and we both lay on the bed. Nothing can happen. I assured myself and Lancy that everything was just a game, nothing more. To assure Lancy, we set up a camera to record the night. Lancy seemed to be asleep, tired with all that crying. I lay quietly, unable to sleep somehow. Through the window, I saw that it started to rain and the window pane became fogged up, with rain drops all over. Suddenly, I saw a black shadow looming across the window. With goose bumps all over me, I ran to the window and opened it, putting my head outside and looking around. There was no one on the street. Thinking that it was just my imagination, I tired to shut the window, when sudden wind swished into my room. Maybe because of the wind and rian, the light utrned off, started to flicker. I quickly closed the window, turned off the flickering light, and flung myslef into into bed. Pullin the blanket up to my face, I waited for minutes, and nothing happend. As starting to get sleepy, I suddenly fainted.

I felt my consciousness fading away. Something was wrong. I was sitting with my hand gripping something. I slowly opened my eyes. The light which should be turned off was flickering. Something warm and wet was soaking my leg and my feet. I looked down and saw Lancy’s stabbed body. The unclosed eyes were looking straight at me with a look a terror. What was terrifying was that I did not scream, but instead felt tip of my lips curling up. A slight movement of my hand caught my attention. Held in my had was blood-soaked Quija board point. It was making out letters.

With a slow turn of my head, I faced the mirror. Inside the mirror was not my reflection, but there sat a demon, tip of its lips curled up grinning. The demon raised the hand holding the point and put it up to its throat. I felt my hand moving up, the Quija point heading at my throat. With a split second of realization, the point slashed through my throat, and I was gone, just like that.

The next day, parents found both girls, dead on the floor, along with a burnt Quia board and called the police in utter horror and sorrow. The police found the recorded file of the camera. It showed of two girls going to bed. Few hours later, a girl abruptly woke up, took the Quija board point, and frantically stabbed her friend Lancy. Then, few seconds later, she stabbed herself in the throat, committing suicide. The video ended right after. Police claimed that it was just murder with hatred, and suicide by feeling of guilt. However, it was a mstery that the weapon, the Quija board point, wasn’t found. The film ended, showing no evidence of the location of the Quija board point or how the board was burnt.

After the police left, the camera whirled and showed the remaining film. After being stabbed in the throat, the girl died. As the girl’s arm fell powerlessly to the ground, the Quija point landed on the board and made some words.

Suddenly, the Quija board was on fire, making dancing shadows on walls. Then, a dark shadowy figure appeared, and with its shadowy arm, it picked up the Quija point. As it walked out the window with the Quija point, faint footsteps were printed in the pool of blood, then disappeared. After the shadowy figure was gone, the film ended. The camera spewed smoke and sparks, and burst into flames.

Structural violence is a form of violence that a social structure inflicts, thus preventing people from meeting their basic needs. After human society was established, structural violence had always co-existed with people. It is a person’s natrual instinct to form groups based on similarities and discriminate the alienated others. Such violence still exists until today in various forms.

Economic society is not an exception. To fulfill the greed of the powerful nations, they usually inflict structural violence upon weaker countries. In general, structural violence allows companies to gain more profit than when they act fairly and equally. One major forms of economic structural violence is exploitation.

Exploitation is when the employer forces the workers to overwork beyond humane limits. Exploitation appeared in different forms as time passed by. In ancient times, slavery had the owner class and the slave class. Being born as a slave made the act of exploitation justified to the society with its accepted hierarcy. In the Middle Ages, feudalism worked as a exploitation. A castle’s lord forced serfs to overwork for them. This was also a hierarchy, but not that serfs had the duty to become slaves of lords. Its is just that to survive, serfs needed land, which they made a contract with lords to borrow some land in exchange with their labor. However, the high interest rate of land rent made serfs to work like slaves.

In modern society, exploitation seems impossible since there is no existing hierarcy in a democratic society. However, the equality of people turned out to be just an ideal option, as capitalism soon budged into people’s lives. As market economy became the main, capitalism followed, forming an unseen hierarchy. Capitalist class and labor class were divided, the former having the economical power. The labor class does not have any resources except for their labor, which they “sell” to the capitalist class. Exploitation is usually inflicted on the lowest labor class, who desperately needs money to meet their basic needs and survive. Companies know that these people cannot evade even the harsh working conditions, since it is the literally only way to live and cannot quit for the sake of their lives. Thus, the ones in higher status force workers to become slaves for themselves.

The capitalitst class and labor class idea is expanded into countries. There are rich, powerful countires, while there are poor, weak countries. Rich countries usually include the first-world countries, while  the other third-world countries. Developed countries usually produce capitals, which they get raw materias from the developing countries. Such act leads to never-ending cycle of developed countries’ economy growing and the delay of developing countries. When rich countries import raw materials, it is frequent that they under pay the poor countries, gaining additional profit. This is an act of exploitation since the poor countries do not get adequate reward for the labor of providing base material.

Exploitation is a obstacle which hinders the growth of fair economy in the international world. Fair trade is needed for the happiness of all, not of few. Many tries are being done to achieve fair economy.

Some humanist organizations inform people about companies inflicting exploitation. Acknowledgement motivate people to use less of products provided by those companies, thus affecting the companies to change their method of production. An exmple is the child exploitation of soccer balls. At one time, it was revealed that famous sports companies, such as Nike, produced their soccer balls by child explotation. People were offended by this fact, thus boycotted those companies. The companies changed their wrong method, saving the children.

Another solution is fair trade product. Recently, fair trade products, such as fair trade chocolate, received spotlight by the media. Fair trade chocolate is chocolate made from cacao beans that was fairly payed back. Even though it is more expensive than other chocolates, it is meaningful. When people realize its value and prefer fair trade product over products using exploitaition, it would change other companies to do fair trade.

People and companies act for their profits. Such natural instinct makes it almost impossible to achieve fair economy. However, it people show the world that they like fair economy better, will affect the compnies since they will know that it is more profitable for them to act fairly. Every small changes make huge changes. It is important that people take interest in having fair economy and change even small parts of their acts.
